LCP's 2008 Children's Theater Workshop

LCP is proud to announce the return of the Children’s Theater Workshop, which provides an opportunity for children between the ages of 8-14 to explore theater.

The CTW is a five-day workshop, from July 28-August 1.  It is designed to introduce children to theater, cultivate individual talents, and afford those with varied experience the opportunity for continued growth and personal challenge.  The workshop will conclude with a Variety Show style performance on August 1, at 7:00pm at the Opera House.

Please note that no previous theater experience is necessary.  Instead, LCP requires that the child have an interest in being involved in the workshop!  The workshop will create a supportive and safe environment for the child to try something new; we only ask that they come willing to try and willing to say YES!

The co-directors of this year’s workshop are Jean Feeney and Melissa Greenwood. Jean has been teaching atJohnson Elementary School for the past 15 years. During the last nine years, in addition to her teaching responsibilities, Jean has coordinated the after-school enrichment program (REACH), starting the drama program at JES. Eight years ago Melissa joined the faculty at JES, teaching general and instrumental music, as well as joining the staff of the REACH program where she added an elective jazz band. Together Jean and Melissa have directed a number of musical productions including Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, Mary Poppins, The King and I, Fiddler on the Roof, and Cinderella.  They are both passionate about theater and thoroughly enjoy watching their students become smitten by the bug.

LCP’s CTW will take place at the Hyde Park Opera House, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm each day. The daily schedule will have four components: theater/movement warm up games, musical theater workshop, improvisational workshop, and technical theater (props, sets, costumes). The goal for the Friday night performance will be to have three to five ensemble musical performances (“We Dance” from Once on this Island, “Tradition” from Fiddler on the Roof, and three additional pieces).  In addition, there will be a number of student created sketches based upon mythology.

Each child should bring their own bag lunch and beverage each day as well as a beach towel. Children should wear comfortable clothes that allow them to sit, lay and roll on the floor, as well we socks, tennis shoes and any dance shoes they may have that will not leave scuff marks. Everything should be able to get dirty, and never hinder movement or imagination. Each child should also bring a 3-ring binder and several pencils each day, and all items should be marked with the child’s name.

The registration fee for the CTW is $100. Scholarships are available—to apply, submit a detailed letter with your child’s application. The workshop will be limited to 25 participants—first come, first served. A waiting list will be created, if necessary.
